Islam Makhachev wins a round by closing the distance and keeping the hips. Uroš Medić wins one by landing the left hand before that distance is gone.

Five rounds. 170. UFC gloves. A title fight. Nothing below is booked. Makhachev defended the belt against Ian Machado Garry on August 15. Medić stopped Daniel Rodriguez on August 1 and is matched with Kevin Holland on November 14.

Why this fight matters

Makhachev is 29-1, 34, 5'10", 70-inch reach, southpaw. UFC welterweight champion. Seventeen straight wins. He took the belt from Jack Della Maddalena by unanimous decision in November 2025 and defended it against Garry by unanimous decision, 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47. Before the move up he D’Arce-choked Renato Moicano in round one and Dustin Poirier in round five, and head-kicked Alexander Volkanovski out in round one of the rematch. The only loss is Adriano Martins, in 2015.

Medić is 14-3, 33, 6'1", 71-inch reach, southpaw. Every UFC win is a knockout. The last four all ended in the first round: Gilbert Urbina at 1:03, Muslim Salikhov at 1:03, Geoff Neal at 1:19, Daniel Rodriguez at 0:30. The losses are a rear-naked choke to Jalin Turner, a neck crank to Myktybek Orolbai, and a 31-second knockout to Punahele Soriano. He has never won a decision in the UFC.

A real version is a champion against a first-minute puncher who has not been asked to wrestle a title fight.

What the tape numbers actually mean

Makhachev lands 2.27 significant strikes per minute at 58 percent and eats 1.42. Defense 61 percent. Takedowns 3.22 per 15 at 54 percent. Takedown defense 91 percent. Submission average 0.9. The Garry night was seven takedowns, a 22-29 striking deficit, and a head kick that put the challenger on his seat. The Della Maddalena night was four takedowns and a 30-18 striking edge. He does not need the volume. He needs the hips.

Medić lands 5.77 at 60 percent and eats 3.40. Defense 56 percent. Takedowns 0.34 per 15 at 50 percent. Takedown defense 55 percent. Submission average 0.0. The output is a left hand. The defense against a shot is the hole, and Orolbai already finished him once he was on the mat.

Height is Medić by three inches. Reach is Medić by one. Age is a year. Stance is southpaw against southpaw. The lead foot is the open side for both.

Striking

Medić’s A-game is the southpaw left, thrown early, and the finish when it lands. Neal, Salikhov, Urbina, and Rodriguez never saw a second round. The spinning back elbow that stopped Matthew Semelsberger is the other entry. He does not build a lead. He ends the minute.

Makhachev’s striking at 170 has been the calf kick, the jab into the level change, and the left head kick that dropped Garry. It was enough to outpoint Della Maddalena and enough to drop a taller man. It is not a firefight. A man who eats 1.42 a minute does not stand in Medić’s pocket to trade.

Grappling

This is the champion’s fight if the first left misses. Outside trip, body lock, the ride, the D’Arce that finished Moicano and Poirier. Medić’s 55 percent takedown defense is the number. Turner took the back and choked him in round one. Orolbai landed seven takedowns and cranked the neck in round two. A high shot gives Medić nothing to hunt. His submission average in the UFC is zero.

Clinch

Makhachev’s office. Underhooks, the trip, dirty boxing on the fence. Medić wants the elbow on the break and a restart in open space. A clinch that becomes a ride is a 10-8. A clinch that breaks clean is another minute for the left hand.

Pace

Round 1 is Medić’s entire recent record. Rodriguez lasted 30 seconds. Makhachev’s title nights have gone 25 minutes, and the finishes in them have been the head kick and the front choke, not a war of attrition. Five rounds exists if the first left hand does not land clean. Medić has not been to the judges in a win. Makhachev has been to them in both welterweight title fights.

Makhachev’s keys

  • Calf kick the lead leg before the first left hand is set.
  • Shoot off the miss, not into the pocket.
  • Ride. The D’Arce is there if the neck comes up. It does not have to be hunted.
  • Head kick is live once the hands drop to catch a leg. Garry already ate it.
  • Steal round one on control so the power never becomes a 10-8.

Medić’s keys

  • Left hand down the pipe in the first minute. Rodriguez was 30 seconds.
  • Do not shell on the fence. Orolbai’s night started there.
  • Spinning elbow if the champion circles to the open side.
  • Stuff the first shot. A second shot is a ride.
  • Stay off the mat. Turner’s choke did not need a long round.

X-factors

Holland. A different Medić comes out of that night if the result lands first. Makhachev has no date in front of this fantasy.

Soriano. Makhachev is not that puncher. The minute is still the whole upset.

Orolbai. Medić has already lost to a wrestler who does not chain like a champion. The mat is not a new problem.

The head kick. Medić’s hands come high to load the left. The kick is the finish that does not need a takedown.

Prediction

Islam Makhachev 78

  • Decision 36
  • Submission 30, rounds 1–2
  • TKO 12, rounds 1–2

Uroš Medić 22

  • TKO 22, round 1
  • Decision 0
  • Submission 0

The pick is the decision. It is the way Makhachev has won the belt and the defense, and it is the largest share of the fight. The front choke is the next share, and Turner and Orolbai already showed the neck. Medić’s knockout is the upset, and it lives in the first minute. A Medić decision is priced at nothing. He has never won one in the UFC. A Medić submission is priced at nothing. His UFC submission average is zero.

What a Makhachev win would mean: the welterweight reign is not a soft landing, and a first-minute puncher still has to wrestle. What a Medić win would mean: the Rodriguez minute travels up to a champion, and the ride arrived late.
